About 7-Zip

7-Zip is an archiving application developed by Igor Pavlov. You can collect documents in a compressed file, extract an archive you have received or prepare a folder for transfer. Its desktop interface provides access to archive contents and the settings used to create new archives. It belongs to the category of utilities. This page covers its use on Windows, with separate installers for different computer architectures. You can use the software free of charge at home and in a business. Its archiving functions require neither registration nor paid activation.

The main attraction is the control available when creating an archive. You choose the format, compression method, dictionary size and, when needed, a password. The 7z format supports methods including LZMA and LZMA2. ZIP is another creation option, while RAR is supported for extraction. That distinction matters: the formats an application can open are not necessarily the ones it can produce.

7-Zip suits folder exchanges, collecting project files and recurring archive operations. A command line tool accompanies the graphical interface. The resulting compression depends on your files and the settings you select. It does not promise the same reduction for every folder or automatically repair a damaged file.

Choose a format your recipient can open

Before creating an archive, decide how it will be opened. A folder being sent to someone else may need a different format from a collection you keep for yourself. The Add to Archive dialog offers options including 7z and ZIP. With 7z, you can use LZMA, LZMA2 and solid compression. ZIP is an option when that format is requested. Still check which compression and encryption methods the recipient's application supports. Having the expected file extension alone does not establish compatibility. Keep the original files until you have checked the result and confirmed that the finished archive opens as intended.

Protect the file names as well as their contents

The password field appears in the settings for creating an archive. For a 7z archive, you can also enable file name encryption. This prevents the contents list from remaining readable without the password. AES-256 encryption is available for 7z and ZIP, although their other options differ. Choose a secret phrase you can store separately from the archive. Then test opening the result with the application intended for reading it. Protection does not remove the need to retain source documents and check your chosen settings. Keep access to the password somewhere other than inside the archive it is meant to unlock.

Match compression settings to available memory

The download size does not describe the memory required for every operation. In the creation dialog, dictionary size, method and other settings change the resources compression needs. 7-Zip displays estimates for both compression and decompression. On a limited computer, start with moderate settings and review these figures before processing a large folder. More aggressive compression may require extra resources without delivering a useful reduction for your particular files. Consider the computer that will open the archive as well. Available disk space must accommodate the resulting archive or the extracted data, depending on the operation you are about to perform.

Extract into a deliberately chosen folder

Open the archive to inspect its file list, then select an identifiable destination folder. The extraction command lets you specify that location and decide what happens when files already exist. This is useful when you want to keep several project versions separate. Dragging files into Windows Explorer may create temporary files before the final copy takes place. To avoid that intermediate stage, use 7-Zip's extraction command. If the archive is split into volumes, collect all its parts before starting. Also allow space for the decompressed contents, which can be considerably larger than the archive file you received on your computer.

Check an archive before removing the originals

The Test command checks whether archive data can be read and can report errors. Run it after creating an important archive or when a download appears incomplete. A result without errors concerns the integrity of the tested archive; it is not an antivirus examination of its contents. If a CRC or data error appears, retain the source files and seek another copy before deleting anything. A split archive also requires checking that every part is present. For important folders, finally compare the extracted items with the files you actually intended to collect, so you also verify the selection you made.

When to consider Total Commander

Among the applications in the catalog, Total Commander may interest you if most of your work involves moving and organizing files between folders. Its two-panel interface also includes archive operations. 7-Zip puts archive creation, extraction and their settings at the center of its workflow. Compare your usual task before choosing: preparing an encrypted archive and managing several locations each day call for different tools. The products also have different licensing conditions. Read the Total Commander page to assess that alternative without assuming it can create every archive format offered here. Your choice should follow the work you perform most often.

Key features

  • Create archives in 7z format using LZMA2.
  • Collect multiple files inside a ZIP archive.
  • Extract the contents of received RAR archives.
  • Encrypt archives in 7z and ZIP with AES-256.
  • Hide file names inside an encrypted 7z archive.
  • Split an archive into multiple separate volumes.
  • Test archives to check for data errors.
  • Run archive operations from the command line.

System requirements

Windows 11, 10, 8 or 7; x64, x86 and ARM64 installers according to system architecture; minimum RAM and installation space not published; allow room for archives and extracted files.

Questions and answers

Is 7-Zip free for business use?

Yes. The developer permits free use on personal and business computers without registration. Most code is licensed under GNU LGPL, with additional conditions for some components. Those conditions cover matters such as redistribution and do not constitute a user subscription.

Can 7-Zip create a RAR archive?

No. RAR belongs to the formats 7-Zip can extract, rather than those it creates. To collect your files using this application, choose a format such as 7z or ZIP, then confirm that your recipient can open the selected format.

What is the difference between x64, x86 and ARM64 downloads?

These installers target different architectures. Check the system type reported by Windows before choosing. x64 is intended for Windows x64 systems, x86 for 32-bit systems, and ARM64 for Windows running on an ARM64 processor. Select the package matching your computer.

Can I use 7-Zip on a computer with little memory?

Requirements depend on the archive and settings in use. A large compression dictionary can need substantial memory. Review the estimates in the archive creation dialog and reduce your settings if the computer does not have enough resources available for the operation.

What does a CRC error during extraction mean?

It means the checked data does not match the expected check value. An incomplete or damaged file may be responsible. Try another copy and check any separate volumes; do not treat a partial extraction as a complete recovery of the archive.

How to install

  1. Check the architecture in Windows system information: x64, x86 or ARM64. Select the matching EXE installer.
  2. Open the downloaded file. If Windows requests administrator permission, check that the request belongs to the installer you just launched.
  3. In the installer window, keep the proposed destination folder or select another location, then click Install.
  4. Wait for copying to finish, then click Close. Open 7-Zip File Manager from the Start menu.
