Choose software to download for a low-spec Windows PC
A computer limited in memory or equipped with an old processor can still be used to consult documents, find files and modify text. However, the choice of program must be based on your task and your version of Windows. This selection brings together four tools with limited functions, without speed ranking or promise to transform the equipment. You will find a file search engine, a document reader, an archiving tool and a text editor. They do not replace all the software on a workstation. First compare the formats you use, then the available architectures and behavior with your own files. A program that starts correctly may still slow down on a huge document or a demanding compression operation.

The number of elements indexed influences the resources used. Check the service and the settings needed for NTFS indexing before comparing your first results.
SumatraPDF
SumatraPDF opens your PDFs, digital books and comics in a reader for Windows.
SumatraPDF is suitable for a workstation primarily used for viewing and printing PDFs or reading other supported documents. Its Windows packages allow you to choose the architecture corresponding to the computer. It does not provide the full functions of a PDF editor. Test your scans and large documents, which may behave differently than a small text file.
7-Zip
7-Zip creates 7z and ZIP archives, extracts RAR files and protects archived content with a password.
7-Zip meets archive extraction and creation needs without requiring a document management suite. You can adjust the compression to the available hardware and view the memory estimate before creating a file. Also plan the space for the extracted data. RAR support is for extraction; this format is not proposed for creating an archive.
Notepad++
Notepad++ edits text and code with tabs, advanced search and syntax highlighting.
With Notepad++ you can edit lists, scripts or configurations in a dedicated text editor. Choose the package corresponding to your architecture and check which extensions are actually needed. A very large file remains a specific workload. This tool does not replace the presentation and layout functions of an office suite.
Start from the concrete problem you encounter
A slowdown when starting the browser and an endless document search do not require the same response. Here, Everything helps to find files by name, while SumatraPDF is used to read documents. Notepad++ addresses working with plain text, and 7-Zip addresses creating or extracting archives. This distribution avoids installing a general suite for a single operation. Note what you do most often and what is really blocking: opening, searching, modifying or exporting. Check Windows before counting megabytes
Current versions do not automatically cover all older systems. SumatraPDF 3.6.1 offers x86 and x64 packages for Windows 7 through 11, while its ARM64 package calls for Windows 10 or 11. The Everything FAQ mentions Windows XP to Windows 11, but the indexing options must match the file system used. Also choose the suitable package for 7-Zip and Notepad++. When the publisher does not publish a minimum memory for the version selected, do not replace this absence with an estimate presented as a fact. The program's compatibility with an older Windows does not describe Microsoft's support for this system.
Use examples that resemble your work
A PDF composed of text and a collection of scanned pages do not necessarily place the same demands on the reader. Likewise, opening a few lines in Notepad++ does not allow you to conclude on a file of several hundred megabytes. Prepare a small set of usual documents and repeat the operations that are important to you. In Everything, the memory used depends in particular on the number of files indexed; searching their contents works differently from using the filename index. Note the context of the test before comparing two results. You will thus be able to choose according to your use without transforming a one-off impression into a general performance ranking.
Adjust the operation before replacing the software
In 7-Zip, some compression settings require more memory; the program displays an estimate in the creation window. A less ambitious setting may be sufficient when your goal is simply to send multiple documents together. For reading PDFs, check if you need to view and print or modify the content: the second need calls for other tools. In a text editor, extensions add their own functions and constraints. Start with a setup you understand, then add only what's missing. This approach helps identify the cause of a problem and avoids changing several elements before knowing which one was useful.
Build a focused set of tools
You can combine these tools without considering them a mandatory pack. A computer dedicated to reading can mainly benefit from a suitable reader, while a file preparation station will use more archiving and searching. Leave enough room for the extracted documents: the small size of an installer does not represent the final size of the job. Which software consumes the least memory?
There is no common answer to these four tools because they accomplish different tasks. Memory also depends on open documents, indexing and settings. Compare equivalent operations on your computer rather than just download volume or window appearance.
Does a portable version work on all old PCs?
No. Portable mainly describes how to launch or store the program, not its hardware compatibility. Always check the Windows version and architecture advertised for the package. A portable executable x64 does not become compatible with a 32-bit system thanks to its distribution method.
Should you install all four programs on this list?
Install those that meet a present task. You can read your documents without needing an additional file index, or occasionally extract an archive without modifying plain text. Add a program when you can identify the operation that it will make easier in your daily use.
Can we replace a word processor with Notepad++?
Notepad++ is suitable for plain text, code and configuration files. It does not replace the layout of a word processor with styles, tables and structured printing. Determine the format of the document you need to produce before choosing a tool purely for its apparent simplicity.
