Observe from where the connection is problematic
A signal received near the router does not always represent that of another room. Distance, obstacles and the position of the computer influence observation. Use the same computer in multiple locations and note the context: time, location, and current activity. You will then be able to recognize a variation without confusing it with a change of adapter. A signal value is not a complete measure of available throughput. Network load and device capabilities also play a role. The objective is to prepare a modification that you can verify from the same locations, with a task representative of your usage.
Read access point specifications
inSSIDer displays in particular the channel, its width, the Wi-Fi generation, the maximum announced speed and the security mode. This information describes the equipment configuration. The advertised speed does not necessarily correspond to the speed of a download. Multiple access points can also broadcast the same network name. To diagnose a signal change, identify the equipment concerned and its location. The list helps reconcile information otherwise distributed across multiple interfaces. It does not replace the administrative access needed to change a setting. Make sure you know which router or access point you are going to modify.
Recognize the Limitations of Wi-Fi Measurement
A Wi-Fi scanner does not directly detect all broadcasts present in a radio band. Some disturbances come from devices that do not communicate via Wi-Fi. Oscium distinguishes this research from spectrum analysis, which requires suitable equipment. An environment with few networks can therefore still present difficulties. Start by reviewing the available data and then formulate a specific hypothesis. Only change one setting at a time so you can interpret the result. A single observation does not prove that a channel will remain lightly occupied all day, because neighboring networks and their uses may change.

inSSIDer offers free use with a free Oscium account. Ordinary discovery functions use the PC's Wi-Fi adapter. Does the strongest signal always give the best speed?
No. Radio load, channel width, device capabilities and upstream connection also matter. Use the signal to compare situations, then check the result with a real task from the places where you normally use the network throughout the day.
Do you need a special adapter to get started?
Ordinary functions of inSSIDer use the PC's Wi-Fi adapter. Some advanced capture functions require compatible hardware and the corresponding offer. Check the precise function sought: network discovery and packet analysis do not always assume the same hardware capabilities.
Can we change the channel directly from the list?
The tool provides observations about networks and their configuration. The change is made in the router or access point with the necessary permissions. Note the initial setting, apply one change at a time, and then compare observations under the same conditions.
