About Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is Adobe’s application for editing photographs and combining images. This page covers the desktop application for Windows, version 27.11. The work takes place in a document made up of layers: each element retains its position and can have separate adjustments. This approach suits photographers, graphic designers and people who need to revise their compositions regularly. Organize a document you can revise later
Start by naming layers according to their role: product, background, shadow or caption. Group layers that belong to the same element. An adjustment layer lets you revisit a color correction without repeating the whole retouching process. Smart Objects retain their source content and make certain repeated transformations easier to manage. Keep the working document as a PSD, then export a copy for distribution. A flattened JPEG does not replace that editable file. For a series of visuals, using the same group structure helps you find the adjustment that needs changing and hand over a document that a colleague can understand.
Cut out a subject while retaining fine details
An automatic selection provides a starting point for isolating a person or object. Next, examine hair, transparent edges and areas whose color resembles the background. Turn the selection into a mask so that you can hide or restore parts of the image. In a product photograph, also check reflections and the contact shadow: a clean outline alone does not make the composition convincing. Temporarily display a light background and then a dark one to spot fringes. Keep the mask in your working document so that you can adjust the cutout if the final background changes after the composition has been approved.
Retouch a photograph with visible checks
To remove a small imperfection, choose a correction tool suited to the surrounding texture. Compare the result with the original regularly and view the image at its intended delivery size. A convincing retouch in a thumbnail may reveal repeated patterns when you zoom in. Separate local corrections from overall brightness and color adjustments wherever possible. Keep a copy of the file you received before starting work. For a commercial catalog, check that your corrections do not unintentionally change the product’s color. Automatic tools can speed up a step, but you still need to inspect the result before sending the finished images.
Allow for memory and scratch disk space
For the Intel or AMD configuration described here, Adobe specifies at least 8 GB of RAM and recommends 16 GB or more. Requirements also include AVX2 and a graphics card compatible with DirectX 12. An older processor can therefore cause problems even with sufficient memory. The minimum 10 GB of free space is not the download size. Documents, history states and the scratch disk require additional room. Adobe recommends 100 GB of free space and a fast SSD. Before starting a large composition, close documents you no longer need and check the space available on the drive Photoshop is using.
Understand the access your Adobe account provides
Full access to desktop Photoshop requires a subscription that includes this application. Check the plan’s contents before committing: an offer focused on the web does not necessarily provide the same rights. In version 27.11, Adobe also describes limited free access to an integrated Firefly experience. This access does not include the complete set of Photoshop tools. Generative services have their own conditions and usage limits. For regular work, review the included applications, renewal terms and the functions you actually need. Successfully installing the application is not enough to establish which features your account is entitled to use for your projects.
Compare editors against the work you need to deliver
GIMP is another option for retouching and composing images with layers. Krita focuses more on drawing and digital painting, with tools suited to brushwork. Paint.NET may suit simpler corrections and compositions on Windows. When choosing, start with a document representative of your work instead of a long feature list. Check the masks, text, colors and formats required for your delivery. If you exchange PSD files, test the actual document in the other application: being able to open it does not guarantee that every editable element will be reproduced exactly as it appeared in the application where it was originally created.

Can you download Photoshop for Windows for free?
Adobe offers limited free access to a Firefly experience inside desktop Photoshop. The full application requires a plan that includes its features. Check the access shown in your account; downloading the application does not automatically unlock every tool available in the editor.
Does Photoshop 27.11 run on Windows 7?
Windows 7 is not among the supported systems. For Intel and AMD PCs, Adobe lists Windows 11 24H2 or 23H2, alongside Windows 10 22H2 or 21H2 LTSC. You also need to check that the processor and graphics card meet the requirements.
Is a PC with 8 GB of RAM enough?
That amount is the stated minimum, not a guarantee of comfortable performance for every project. Layer count, image dimensions and other applications affect the memory required. Adobe recommends 16 GB or more for the computer configuration described on this page.
Why keep a PSD as well as a JPEG?
A PSD can retain the composition’s layers, masks and adjustments. A JPEG is mainly used to share a flattened image. Keeping both allows you to distribute the result while preserving a working document that you can return to for later corrections.
What should you do when Photoshop says the scratch disk is full?
Check free space on the scratch disk selected in preferences. Close documents you no longer need and move personal files that you have backed up. Allow lasting headroom: temporary files can take up much more space than the final image itself.

- Download the Creative Cloud desktop application from Adobe and sign in to your account.
- In Creative Cloud, open Apps, then All apps, and locate Photoshop.
- Select Install for desktop Photoshop and follow the instructions shown. Check that your access covers the functions you need.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish. Photoshop then opens; you can also launch it from Creative Cloud.
