About Paint.NET

Paint.NET is an image editor for Windows developed by Rick Brewster and dotPDN. It allows you to crop a photograph, correct its colors or compose several elements with layers. This category application focuses on Windows and offers an interface where the tools, history and list of layers remain accessible while working. The classic download is free, while a paid distribution is offered in the Microsoft Store with its own update process.

The program is suitable for routine edits, annotated screenshots, and compositions that require more than just cropping. You can isolate areas with selections, add text, and experiment with effects, all while maintaining a working document in PDN format. Exporting to a common format is then used for sharing. Additional functions may come from community-developed modules, the compatibility of which must be checked separately. Paint.NET today requires a system and processor compatible with its current requirements; its accessible appearance doesn't mean it works on any old computer. Before preparing a major project, check the equipment and how you want to store editable elements.

Work with clearly named layers

Place the background, added elements, and annotations on separate layers. This organization allows you to move an element or modify its opacity without immediately affecting the rest of the composition. Give layers explicit names so you can find them when the document becomes more complex. Save a copy as a PDN before merging or flattening the image. The distribution format chosen next may only retain a single image. For a screenshot intended for a guide, for example, keep the text and marks separate from the background: you can revise an explanation or move an arrow without redoing the entire annotated screenshot.

Select an area before correcting it

A selection limits changes to part of the image. Geometric tools are suitable for regular areas, while other methods respond to less simple contours. Examine the edge of the selection before applying an effect that accentuates the differences. Too sharp an outline can create a visible break between the corrected area and its environment. You can also work on a copy of a layer to compare the result to the original. For photographic editing, return to a view of the whole thing regularly: a precise close-up correction should still appear consistent when the image is viewed at its normal size or in its intended viewing context.

Use effects while keeping the image readable

Color adjustments and effects allow you to quickly transform a photograph or graphic element. First define the problem you want to solve, such as an image that is too dark or insufficient contrast, then adjust a small number of settings. A visible effect does not automatically improve readability. For an image containing text, check small text after resizing and exporting. For a photo, examine the details in the light and dark areas. The history allows you to undo actions during the session, but a saved version of the document is still useful before a big transformation or a series of tests that you want to compare later.

Choose a working format and an export format

The PDN format preserves layers for later work. JPEG is often suitable for a photograph when transparency is not necessary, while PNG can retain transparent areas and sharp edges. Review the options provided at the time of saving and open the produced file to examine how it looks. Compression and dimensions influence file size and visible quality. If you are preparing an image for multiple locations, keep a large enough working source and produce suitable copies. Subsequently enlarging a small image does not restore the details lost during a previous reduction or compression.

Check hardware and additional plugins

The current version requires a compatible 64-bit processor, with AVX2 on Intel or AMD, or ARM64 architecture, and at least four cores. The GPU must support Direct3D 11. The necessary .NET component is integrated into the application according to the official page, eliminating the need to search for it separately. History also uses temporary storage whose need depends on images and actions. Community modules add effects or formats, but they follow their own updates. Before installing one, check its source and supported versions, then test it on a copy of your document.

Compare retouching and drawing needs

GIMP offers a more extensive approach to composition, masks and complex selections. Krita is geared more towards digital painting and pen work. Another commercial option for creating and editing is Adobe Photoshop. Paint.NET may correspond to an activity focused on direct image modifications and reasonably sized compositions. To choose, try your usual task: annotate a screenshot, cut out a simple object, and export a transparent image. Also observe how easy it is to return to the document a week later, because the organization of the layers is as important as the speed of the first modification.

System requirements

Windows 10 21H2 or later, Windows 11 or Server 2022; x64 AVX2 or ARM64, 4 cores; Direct3D 11; RAM not specified, disk depending on work.

Questions and answers

Is Paint.NET free or paid?

The classic distribution offered on the official website is free. The Microsoft Store version is paid and uses the store update mechanism. Check your chosen channel before downloading, as the two distribution methods are presented separately.

Can it keep multiple layers in one file?

Yes, the PDN format retains the layer structure for resuming work. An image exported in a common format may be flattened. So keep your PDN document and a separate export copy for when you want to be able to move or edit items later.

Does it work on an older 32-bit PC?

The current version requires 64-bit architecture and specific hardware specifications. On Intel or AMD, the processor must notably support AVX2 and have at least four cores. Check the official requirements before starting the installation on an old computer.

Should you install .NET separately?

The official page states that the version of .NET used is included in the application. So follow the normal installation of the chosen package. If an error appears, keep its exact message to identify the cause instead of randomly adding multiple system components.

Are all extensions included?

No, community modules are separate additions. They may offer effects or support for additional formats. Check their compatibility with your version of Paint.NET and test their operation on a copy before using them in an important document.

How to install

  1. Choose the classic free download from the official page.
  2. Download the Windows package and open the provided installer.
  3. Choose quick or custom installation according to your needs.
  4. Allow the installation of the included components to complete.
  5. Open Paint.NET and create and save a test PDN document.
