About GIMP
GIMP is an image editor developed by The GIMP Team with contributions from its community. It allows you to correct a photograph, cut out an object or compose an illustration from several elements. You are working in a document made up of layers, each of which can receive its own adjustments and mask. The program belongs to category and offers an official installer for Windows. Its open code and free access are suitable for both occasional use and regular editing.
GIMP becomes particularly useful when a correction must remain localized. You can lighten a face without changing the entire landscape, replace a background or prepare several variations of the same composition. Its XCF format preserves the structure of the work for later editing. The files intended for a site, a correspondent or a print are then exported in a suitable format. This distinction between working document and delivered image requires some practice, but avoids losing editable elements too early. GIMP is aimed more at the construction and correction of images than at the classification of a photographic collection.
Keep a document you can edit later
Start by keeping the original image on one layer and place your edits on separate elements. Name the layers according to their role, for example background, subject or text. A mask allows you to hide part of an element without erasing the corresponding pixels. This method facilitates reframing and later adjustments to cutouts. Save the document regularly in XCF, especially before merging elements. An image exported as JPEG will not retain this organization. For a composition intended for several dimensions, also keep a sufficiently large working version and adapt each export to its final use.
Choose selections that suit the edges
Selection tools respond to different situations. An area of uniform color can be selected quickly, while a complex silhouette often requires a combination of paths, masks and brushwork. Examine the result on a light background then on a dark background to spot halos. Avoid judging only at very high zoom: an acceptable border at output size may appear jagged when greatly enlarged. For hair or transparent objects, plan to work progressively and keep the mask so that you can refine delicate passages without starting the entire selection again.
Correct colors with a clear purpose
Levels and curves are used to adjust the distribution of tones, while color adjustments are used to correct a cast. Before adding more effects, identify the problem: insufficient contrast, crushed shadows, or inconsistent color balance. Work on a copy or in a layer organization that allows you to compare your correction to the original. A photograph intended for a screen and a document prepared for a print workflow do not necessarily meet the same constraints. Check the profile requested by the recipient and examine the highly saturated areas, where a color transformation may become particularly visible.
Prepare each image for its destination
For a photograph posted online, choose the necessary dimensions before adjusting the JPEG compression. For an element with transparency, use a format that preserves the alpha channel, such as PNG. Open the exported file to check how it actually looks, because the XCF document does not directly show any compression losses. Small texts and contrasting outlines quickly reveal flaws. If you need to produce several variations, write down their dimensions and names in a simple convention. You will thus distinguish the source document, the image intended for the site and the one prepared for another distribution.
Arrange the workspace for your images
The layers, brushes, and history panels can take up a significant portion of the screen. Keep the ones you need visible during the current task, then adapt the layout for your next job. Large images, many layers, and long undo sequences increase memory and temporary storage requirements. A file that opens correctly does not therefore ensure an immediate reaction to each filter. Before installing an extension, check that it claims compatibility with your branch of GIMP. An extension intended for an older generation may require adaptation and should not be assumed to be interchangeable.
Compare image editors in the catalog
Krita deserves your attention if brush drawing, illustrations and drawn animations make up the bulk of your work. Paint.NET is suitable for more direct image edits in a Windows-centric interface. Adobe Photoshop offers another commercial environment, with its own tools and licensing requirements. To choose, try a concrete task: cut out the same object, edit some text and export a transparent image. Also compare how the document remains editable. The presence of a function in several software programs does not guarantee the same settings or the perfect preservation of layers during file exchange.

Questions and answers
Is GIMP completely free?
Yes. GIMP is free software that you can download and use without purchasing a license. The project accepts contributions, but payment is not required for access to the editing tools of the official version distributed on its site.
Why does GIMP save as XCF?
XCF preserves the layers and other elements needed to resume work. To transmit an image in a common format, use the export command. Keep the XCF in parallel if you need to modify the composition after delivery.
Can you open a Photoshop file?
GIMP can import PSD files, but not all Photoshop-specific functions are transposed identically. Check texts, effects and complex elements after opening. For an important file exchange, also request a flattened reference image.
Does GIMP replace a photo manager?
Its main role is individual image editing and composition. It does not constitute a complete photographic library on its own. Organize your originals and exports into separate folders before beginning a series of repetitive edits.
What version of Windows do you need?
The current installer advertises Windows 10 version 1903 or later and supports x86-64 and ARM64 architectures. The Microsoft Store distribution has different terms. So check the chosen channel before downloading a package for your computer.
How to install
- Download the Windows installer from the official GIMP page.
- Launch the EXE file and follow the language and installation choices.
- Complete the installation then open GIMP from the Start menu.
- Create a test document and save a first XCF copy.
