About The Battle for Wesnoth

The Battle for Wesnoth is a free strategy game developed by a community of contributors. You command units on a map made up of hexagons and take turns making your decisions. The campaigns tell of conflicts between peoples and factions in a fantasy universe. This entry in the games category presents the version for Windows. It is suitable for people who want to think about their movements, follow a multi-scenario adventure, and learn the strengths of their troops without having to act at the speed of a real-time strategy game.

The terrain, resistance and time of day modify the combat conditions. An attack retains an element of uncertainty: a favorable position improves your chances without guaranteeing every hit. Units that survive accumulate experience and can evolve. In a campaign, preserving a veteran therefore also changes the possibilities of subsequent battles. You recruit, recall available fighters and distribute your resources between immediate reinforcements and continuity of your army.

The game also offers multiplayer games and community content. Built-in campaigns are an easier starting point to follow than a randomly chosen set of extensions. You can start alone, learn the rules, then join human opponents with a compatible version and content.

Read the terrain before moving a unit

Each hexagon represents a location with its own properties. A forest, a hill or a body of water does not offer the same advantages to all units. Before moving a fighter, consult the defense indications and the accessible hexes. A fast troop can reach a distant village while finding itself isolated on the opponent's turn. Also think about the movements of your other units: occupying a hex can close a useful passage. The best placement depends on the entire front and the objectives of the scenario. The information displayed is used to compare options before confirming your decision.

Keep veterans alive throughout a campaign

Experience transforms the units that participate in combat and survive. In campaigns that use recall, you then find certain fighters instead of recruiting only beginners. This continuity gives particular value to specialists, healers and units close to leveling up. Distribute experience opportunities as needed and remove a wounded troop when the situation allows. A victory obtained at the cost of your entire army can make the rest more difficult. Check the scenario objectives and end conditions: they indicate what you actually need to accomplish to progress in the story.

Plan around combat probabilities

The odds of hitting are part of the rules. Even with a good position, several attacks can miss their target. Examine the possible damage and keep a solution if the first encounter is not enough. A defensive line, an available replacement or a route of retreat reduces the consequences of an unfavorable result. The time of day also affects certain units depending on their alignment. You can therefore adapt the timing of an offensive to your army. Systematically reloading a save to get a better result often makes it difficult to understand how to build a plan that can handle this uncertainty.

Match add-ons to your game version

The content manager provides access to campaigns, factions and other community creations. An extension can modify the usual rules or request other files. Read its overview before adding it to an ongoing campaign, then check its compatibility with your branch of Wesnoth. For a game with friends, agree on the same content so that everyone can join the session. Keep your important saves before updating or changing extensions. Content provided by contributors has its own maintenance rhythm and does not always follow that of the included campaigns.

Prepare your first multiplayer session

Multiplayer requires choosing a scenario and settings adapted to the time available. A small map allows you to discover how the rounds unfold without waiting for an entire campaign. Check the victory conditions, teams and any special rules before the start. A human opponent exploits the weaknesses of a placement differently than artificial intelligence. Take the time to understand the opposing units and announce your level when you join an open game. If the session uses expansions, install the necessary items before starting to avoid delaying other players.

Compare with Freeciv and 0 A.D.

Freeciv focuses on the development of a civilization, its cities, its research and its diplomacy. It is suitable if you want to manage an empire over long periods of time. 0 A.D. offers a real-time strategy where the economy and armies evolve simultaneously. Wesnoth focuses on tactical positions, unit characteristics and fantasy campaign progression. Choose according to the decision that interests you: administer a territory, lead an economy during battle or prepare each movement in turn. All three games are in the catalog, but their rhythms and game objectives differ.

Questions and answers

Is The Battle for Wesnoth free?

Yes. The game is distributed as free software and you can play without purchasing an included campaign. Contributions to the project are separate from access to the game. Community extensions do not constitute a subscription formula imposed to follow the proposed adventures.

Can you play alone without a permanent connection?

Downloaded single-player campaigns allow local play. A connection is still required to retrieve the program, updates or additional content. Games on a server naturally require network access during the session with other participants.

Why does an attack miss despite a good position?

The combat system uses probabilities. Favorable terrain or a suitable unit does not guarantee every impact. Check the posted odds and allow for a margin of safety, especially if a veteran's survival depends on the outcome of this attack.

Do old saves work after an update?

It depends on the game branch, campaign and expansions used. Keep a copy of your saves before changing versions. Check the compatibility information published with the update and the affected content.

Do I need to install all the extensions for multiplayer?

No. You only need the content used by the chosen game. A session using the built-in campaigns and factions does not require every community add-on. Check the lobby information and coordinate any required downloads with the other players before joining.
